I am Gustavo

Gustavo Otzoy, a Guatemalan immigrant, was one of 200 unhoused residents who were forcibly evicted from Echo Park Lake in Los Angeles in 2021. This short film offers a glimpse into his life, a tireless advocate for Los Angeles' unhoused and immigrant communities. Gustavo's dedication to helping others mirrors his late mother's compassion, inspiring hope amidst the city's houselessness crisis.

Filmed a year before his unexpected passing in November 2023, I am Gustavo captures Gustavo Otzoy's unwavering commitment to fighting for the rights of LA's unhoused residents. This short film is a humble tribute to Gustavo's resilience and compassion, highlighting the stark realities faced by thousands of individuals living on the streets. As of 2024, Los Angeles has witnessed an average of seven unhoused deaths a day. There is an urgent need for community support and systemic change. While I am Gustavo provides only a brief glimpse into Gustavo's life, it aims to inspire continued advocacy and action towards ensuring every Angeleno has a safe and secure home.
